Boccadirosa

Intense, aromatic and floral

The icon of the Colli Piacentini region fills the nose with an explosion of white flowers and Mediterranean herbs. A white like few others: it’s our Malvasia Aromatica di Candia.

Breath of Spring

The calm after the storm. Carried by the wind centuries ago, Malvasia Aromatica di Candia delicately recounts a restless past. We are all made differently: looks, character, tastes, and intuitions. It is these traits that make us special, unique. But what is it that makes us who we are? In the case of Malvasia Aromatica di Candia hundreds of years of journeys, thousands of kilometers traveled at the mercy of the wind, accidental meetings of opposing people form the core of this wine’s character.
The vine that has come to represent the Colli Piacentini region actually comes from the Peloponnese. Or so the legend goes. Knowing the details of its story is not that important. All we need to know is that this wine, rooted in our region centuries ago, is a multifaceted white that carries a variety of flavors. The aroma of Mediterranean herbs combines with the spontaneity of elderberry and the sweetness of white flowers to form a full-bodied drink without equal.

character

Luretta proposes an unusual version of Malvasia Aromatica di Candia: instead of light and sparkling, firm and intense. This is the only way to respect the rich character of this very special grape variety. The typical grape of the Colli Piacentini, ripened in the sun to offer a wine with multifaceted scents, ranging from sweet white flowers to Mediterranean herbs.

history

It was the merchants of the Republic of Venice who brought Malvasia Aromatica di Candia to Italy from Greece. Among these the most famous is probably Pietro Querini, senator of the Republic, who on April 25, 1431, sailed from Candia to reach Flanders with a cargo of spices, fabrics, and 800 barrels of Malvasia Aromatica. Following repeated storms, Querini lost control of his boat and was carried by the current for weeks. The crew touched down nine months later when they arrived in the Lofoten archipelago in Norway.

Despite the misadventures of traders, Malvasia succeeded in settling in what is now northern Italy, becoming one of the most renowned wines of the area thanks to its powerful and inimitable aroma. In 2000 there were 30,000 hectares of Malvasia in Italy, but 15 years later the extension had been reduced to only 9,000 hectares. It is a niche grape variety, cultivated by few specialized wineries. Malvasia is often produced in sweet or sparkling versions. But according to Luretta, this traditional method could not exalt all the potentialities of such a rich and intense grape. For this reason, since 1992, we have been producing Boccadirosa, a unique still white wine, which has not been modified for thirty years. Why? No need for change.
